surface tension: living a daily reality of injustice

on the 25th anniversary of the tragic and unremedied chemical disaster in Bhopal, India, studio béluga invites you to an exhibition of photographs and stories about resistance and survival in daily life. Melanie Hadida, who has traveled to Bhopal twice for socio-economic justice research, and Justin Shoub, who recently returned from a Middle-East trip that included unofficial access to Palestinian refugee camps, have worked hard to bring together an exhibit that celebrates the warmth and humanity of both places. they hope to introduce you to the unique and vibrant cultures that spring up in spite of — and sometimes because of — resistance to injustice.

vernissage is saturday, november 21st: 7-11pm
exhibit available for viewings by appointment for the following week.
refreshments provided; prints and other fundraising merchandise available for sale.
at studio béluga: #32A, 999 rue du collège, montréal, québec. three blocks north of metro place-st.-henri. call (514)754-7832 or email studiobelugacontact@gmail.com for more information.

Liz Airton: Anti-Gender Lollipops

i’m liking this lollipop metaphor… though what it’s metaphorizing, i don’t know…

liz airton is moving from montreal to toronto to do her PhD at york. she’s changing the face of education, particularly as it relates to gendering the bejezus out of everybody.

i’m hoping she’s still into using this pic (a door in colombo, sri lanka) for the cover of her book. that would be cool. nothing like piggy-backing on your friends’ brilliance.

Lazy daisy
I’m newly obsessed with light, purple, vintage, photography and trying to embrace my béluga nature, all the while being an unproductive member of the pod, floating aimlessly, staring at the big blue sky.

Art+Culture.com

home-logo

For the past couple of months, I have been a “content curator” for www.artandculture.com. It was one of these Craigslist ads that look too good to be true: get paid to write blogs, add artists to a website, while gaining visibility for your writing and making new contacts in the art world. I gave it a shot. And it worked.

Directed and organized by a New York based artist Marc Lafia and the founder of Artadia, Christopher Vroom, the site is meant to make connections and to encourage interdisciplinary research. There is a vast database of artists, ranging from experimental musicians to famous movie stars, painters, scupltors, new media artists, dancers, theorists, and curators. There are blogs, written by members and content curators. There is a directory of other blogs, added by curators, and links to venues. There is a promise of an international art event calendar, which would be linked to the rest of the database. It’s an ambitious project, and I’m extremely excited to be a part of it.

Here is a link to my page on the site: http://www.artandculture.com/users/2918-natalia-lebedinskaia, where you can find my blog and media. The blog entries are a wild assortment of found articles, lists, links, and my own writing. Hope you enjoy them.

…like we were saying, the abandoned factory across the street is ripe for exploration. after all, what could be more fun than wandering through dirty, unsafe, cavernous graffiti-filled halls — especially with a beer/fish in hand? join us this friday, july 10th, 5:30-7:30. you know you want to. meet at studio béluga, #32A 999 rue du college (st. henri metro).

JUMP THE FENCE

vernissage photos

thanks to everyone who made our inaugural vernissage ESTUARY such a fantastic success. it’s safe to say we haven’t had that much fun above water in a long time. highlights included poring over hundreds of handwritten secret desires (part of matt james’ whack and blight installation), being served by two totally blowhole-worthy bartenders, rubbing shoulders with the likes of artist janet werner, feminist theorist marilyn casselman and choreography orazio giurdanella; and ending the night in the street, in the dark, in the rain, ballroom dancing.

here are some photos. see more on the new studio béluga flickr.

ESTUARY 2ESTUARY 1ESTUARY 3

another highlight: jumping the fence and exploring the abandoned factory across the street. we’ve done it before, but never to down liquor in cocktail dresses. which gave us an idea: maybe you’d like to come, too. so we’re doing a little byob* trespassing this friday at 5:30. check it out.

*bring your own beer/fish.
