Béluga Residencies: mini pod & winter gift fair

ok all you little crafty porpoises, it’s time to get your flippers in gear.

the studio béluga holiday gift fair is happening on december 19th and 20th. we want to sell your art!  this is a great opportunity for you to engage in all the little celebratory projects you’ve been putting off in order to focus on large-scale pieces with dark themes of subversion and nihilism. it’s about affordable objects of beauty, decor and adornment. it’s about last-minute shopping. it costs $40 for you to participate and every piece must be priced at or under $40. admission to the event is free and refreshments will be provided.

applications (including images of your work) are due december 1st but, like, get on with it sooner. you will be given print and online invitations to slide under the doors of your nearest and dearest. you will feel creative and festive. you will be given cookies.

winter gift fair

and if you’re not sure you’re going to have the time or the resources to get some great objets d’art together, consider joining our short-term winter intensive pod (from henceforth, the i-pod). in this little i-pod, which runs from december 1st to 31st, we’re hoping to support you in making gifts for those you love.

yes, you can still do other work, yes, you can create large-scale work of sombre tones (what is it with you and nihilism, anyway?), but if you’re an artsy person who knows they could make that over-priced necklace in the window, if they only had the time and round-tipped needle-nose pliers, we want to talk to you. our idea is to provide the space, encouragement, and gift-making essentials so that you can get on with the fun part, which is not spending hours comparing costs in de serres, but rather, in creating something beautiful for someone you love.

to that end, this is what we can offer you, at wholesale prices:

  • white watercolour gift cards, the kind that cost $6 when someone else makes them: great for collage, painting acrylic or watercolour, sketching, stenciling, stamping and just maybe gluing a photograph onto. they come with envelopes that have a deckled ege!
  • a variety of frames: we have them from all over — umbra to ikea, sears to garage sales, family heirlooms and dollarama. nothing makes art look like REAL ART like a frame. individually priced.
  • canvases: pre-stretched, sometimes even pre-painted! pretty much the most important part of a painting (aside from the inspiration, bien sur) and pretty much free.
  • jewelry-making supplies: earring hooks, wire, pliers, beads, ribbon, even a few bezzle-cut gemstones from far-off lands.
  • and other, more woodshop-type tools, such as glue-gun, super glue, hammer+nails, sandpaper, and really random, beautiful, found wood.

the i-pod happens just once a year. so, like, come on. get your craft on.

*cost: $200 for month-long studio residency + $40 key deposit (to be returned at the end); this includes the $40 gift-fair participation fee. studio béluga takes 20% commission off works sold, which is a damn good deal if you ask me, since we use that money to feed you cookies.
*applications, including images of your work and a brief description of the projects you hope to pursue, are due friday, november 20th 2009. send them to studiobelugacontact@gmail.com, care of: the blues.
